The chords are mostly around D, A and E in various positions on the neck. He's playing the melody in the treble strings and filling in the basses when the melody is holding. He's also using a flat 7, which is such a nice sound, and some suspended chords like the Dsus towards the beginning of the song. There is not a specific pattern to use because the idea is to hear the melody of the song while you're filling in chords with parts of a Travis pick. The main idea of a Travis pick is having the Thumb play notes on the strong beats.... beats 1, 2, 3, and 4... while the fingers fill in notes of the melody. To make the melody fit... sometimes the Travis pick is even suspended. In the first measure on beats 3 and 4 you don't play any bass notes with your thumb. It's a little trickier to master this song than some of the other songs. If you are finding it too hard... just slow it way down or come back to it later. In the book, it is written out in musical notation and in guitar tab. To write it out with just chords would miss whole melody. I don't think there is a 'better' way to write it out.
